Visiting Taiwan for my second time in ten years, I wanted to reacquaint myself with the nuisances of the urban sprawl of Taipei, but most particularly with my favorite stop on the MRT line, the last stop on the northern route called Danshui (Tamshui). Having gone there with a close friend in 2006, I fell in love with the ambiance, the nightlife and the romantic atmosphere it offers, particularly just before and into the twilight hours. After five separate trips there, I rode away on the last train of the evening with a deepened appreciation for that little town and its vibrant culture. I had the pleasure of sitting on an 8th floor rooftop overlooking the river on the evening of the Moon Festival, eating barbeque with a friend's family that went out of their way to spoil me with delicious food and a spectacular view. My heart ached to live there, as I knew my laptop and I would spend countless nighttime hours writing about all the emotions this city evoked in me. Away from Danshui, I explored the NE coastline with another fantastic friend, trekked to remote cities surrounded by subtropical rain forests, and felt my soul torn by the desire to make this my home.... at least for a while. Just as with my first journey to Taiwan, I felt a surreal tug at my heart from upon seeing the first lights of Taiwan's fishing boats along her eastern coast until I watched them vanish in the distance upon my departure. Even more so than the hometown of my birth, it beckons me each time to return again and consider a much longer stay.
